Nestled in a quiet green valley in Selenge Province, Amarbayasgalant Monastery is one of Mongolia’s most beautiful and historically important Buddhist temples. Often called “The Monastery of Tranquil Felicity,” Amarbayasgalant was built in the 18th century to honor Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, Mongolia’s first Bogd Gegeen and greatest Buddhist artist. Today, it stands as a masterpiece of traditional architecture, spirituality, and harmony with nature—making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring northern Mongolia.

Built by the Manchu Emperor Yongzheng

Construction began in 1727 and took nearly 7 years to complete.

Unlike many other monasteries, Amarbayasgalant survived the 1930s purges with far less destruction. Around 30 of its 40 temples remain intact today.

Ongoing restoration

Many buildings have been restored since the 1990s, preserving their original beauty.
